El Faro is superbly situated at the very heart of La Viña, a famous fishers' quarter within the historical center of Cadiz which has marvelously passed on its character to the sea inspired cuisine made in this restaurant. This traditional quarter has its origin in the construction of La Palma church on a field planted with vines and it is nowadays the heart of the city which beats with the rhythm of the drums and cymbals played during its carnival, a party in which fun is everything.
The restaurant is also next to La Caleta beach, a cove between Santa Catalina and San Sebastián fortresses that were historically used to protect the west side of the city. Today, it is the ideal place to enjoy the most beautiful sunsets.
Precisely, in San Sebastián Castle, situated in a small island, we can see the lighthouse to which our restaurant owes its name.
El Faro's history is marked by the professional career of a single person: Gonzalo Córdoba who set up, in the same place where the restaurant currently runs, a tavern specialized in sherry, the traditional fried and marinated fish, baby squids, anchovies, and the unbeatable grass shrimp fritters.
However, that project did not meet his expectations and he ventured to recover Cadiz cookery, traditional homemade dishes whose modesty did not allow them to jump to Haute Cuisine and were only offered privately in the form of tapa.
